Colonel Robert Allen of Botetourt County, Virginia married Mary Wingfield, daughter of Judge G. A. Wingfield of Bedford County, Virginia about 1852. They lived for a few years in Salem, Virginia. Colonel Allen commanded the 28th Virginia Regiment and his brother-in-law, Lietenant Colonel William Lewis Wingfield. The 28th was part of Pickett's division.
